Hi Families!
I hope you all had a great weekend! We are so impressed with all the work you have been doing in Seesaw! Keep up all your hard work! Please make sure you thoroughly read this newsletter as there will be some changes next week in each subject area! We will be posting the Seesaw activities the night before so parents can review the lesson and prepare for the next day. Please feel free to look at the assignments when they are posted, however, please do not post your response until the next day. Remember, all assignments are due by Saturday at 7PM. After that time the lessons will be archived and only posted to your students’ journal IF they completed the assignment. Reading: Continue to use Lexia and stamina read daily. You can use Raz-kids for supplemental reading material. This week’s featured book on Monday is Down the Road by Alice Schertle. Learning Target: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson Vocabulary: mended- fixed, one dozen-twelve, dillydally- waste time, meadow- field of grass, emporium- store selling many kinds of things, dry goods- items made from cloth or fabric, bolts of fabric- rolls of cloth This will be Monday’s reading lesson and Wednesday the students will read a nonfiction book off Scholastic. Writing: We are on our 2nd week of SERIES WRITING. Series writing is a realistic fiction story which has fictional characters going through real problems. Examples of these books in a series are: Biscuit, Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad, Junie B. Jones, etc. They have the same characters, but the setting (when and where), problem, and solution change in each book. Your child will begin Book 2 this week while revising Book 1. As a reminder be sure to print off a 5 page booklet. Page 1 is the introduction, page 2 is the events that lead to the problem, page 3 the problem is revealed, page 4 the events that lead to the solution, and page 5 is the conclusion. In week 3, they will begin Book 3. In week 4, they will begin Book 4. We will be teaching a new strategy each day. Each Thursday, students will send us their Series Book for that week through Seesaw or email. As the weeks progress you should see improvement within their writing as they continue to learn more strategies. Of course, we encourage your child to continue to go back to their books and revise them after they learn another strategy. We sent the following documents the first week to help guide and support their writing: Series Writing Paper, Series Writing Checklist, Series Writing Transition Words. Please let us know if you need them resent. Math: Special note: First Grade teachers have decided to send home Module 6 Problem Set Books. You will be getting these books in the mail before we begin Module 6 so please just hold on to them in a safe spot! The Seesaw lessons will be identical to the Problem Set books for Module 6 so students have the option of doing their work on Seesaw or in their Problem Set books. The Seesaw lesson will show the 3-5 required problems for that assignment, however, the problem set will have more. You can do the extra problem set problems for an extension activity. We are trusting that you will not get ahead of the Seesaw lessons because it is important they watch the corresponding lesson first before doing any work! Our lessons will not be in numerical order so students will have to see what lesson number we are working on each day. We hope that providing the Problem Set books will take some stress away from the math work! Just remember to upload a picture of the completed required problems and upload to Seesaw. This week, please complete the lessons on Seesaw just like previous weeks. Your goal is to try and complete the entire first template! In addition, if you notice your student getting distracted or not being able to focus, set a timer for 10 minutes. During that 10 minutes, your child should be independently working on the math problems. Once the timer goes off, your child can be done and start going over their work with you. Students should be working that entire 10 minutes just like we did in class! On Thursday there will be an End of Module 4 Student Check-in. Please have your child complete all pages and problems on their own! You can read them the problems, but please do not help them solve or go over at the end. We want to see how students are doing with the math lessons. Also, below you will find the previous weeks’ math lessons for reference. The days with a star are key lessons that students should watch even if they did not complete the assignment.
