Happy Friday Families!
Our class had so much fun this week visiting the book fair, dressing wacky for our spirit day, and enjoying our reward party of PJs and Donuts! I am so proud of how hard our class has been working and how much progress they have shown! I can't wait to share their learning with you at conferences! Writing: This weeks focus was conventions! We practiced writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Each student took a look at some messy sentences and helped correct them. Many students have started to check for capitalization at the start of each sentence and have even noticed they accidentally put capital letters in the middle of words! It is great to see students edit their own work! Reading: Our class continued learning about Non-Fiction books in reading this week. Together our class learned how to figure out the harder words in our books by taking words apart and then crashing the parts back together! Students did a great job of demonstrating these skills with words such as shark, bite, and tooth! Math: During math this week, we started solving addition sentences with 8 in them by making ten. We all agreed that making 10 is the easiest strategy to use because 10 is such a friendly number! By the end of the week, most students automatically knew that 8+2 makes 10 and could solve the rest of the problem easily! Social Studies: As we looked at families this week, we continued adding to our world map of where our families come from! It is so fun to see our map getting more colorful and hearing about each families experiences! Our class also took a look at how families can change over time and charted how our families changed once we were born! Buddies: This week we visited our 3rd Grade buddy class and were faced with a challenge! Our challenge was to create a non-fiction book with our buddy. Each book had to contain 2-3 facts, at least 3 pages, and details in pictures and words. By the end of our challenge, each buddy group successfully worked together to create their own non-fiction book and earned a PIZZA PARTY!! On December 11th, our class and our buddy class will get to make their own pizza's and eat them for lunch! We are all so excited to share this experience with our buddies! As a reminder, there will be no school next Thursday and Friday. I hope you all have a great weekend! Happy Friday Families! This short week flew by and we had so much fun doing art with one of our art docents and having Science To Go come to our class! We got to explore living and non-living things with our in house field trip!
Writing: Students completed their first writing unit! Many students have learned so much when writing a small moment story! This week we focused on our conventions such as a capital at the beginning of a sentence or name, punctuation, and spelling. Together we composed a list of sight words we all know how to spell and agreed that from now on, we can't spell them wrong! Reading: Every student is growing as a reader! It is so amazing to see how each student uses different reading strategies to figure out tricky words and really understand what they are reading. This week we focused on rereading our non-fiction books to make sure we really understood what we were reading. We also reread our books to make our voices sound nice and smooth when reading our books! Math: This week in math we started our second module! Students have been breaking apart number sentences to make them easier to solve. Together, we have been breaking apart 9+ problems to make them a 10+ problem. For example, we would take the problem 9+4 and take 1 from the 4 and bring it to the 9 to make 10. Our problem then became 10+3 which was so much easier to solve! Social Studies: During social studies this week, our class explored how families can be different shapes, colors, sizes and come from all parts of the earth! We traveled to different countries to learn about different family traditions and celebrations. Our class also created our own world map where we will mark down where all of our families originated from! Please remember that we have the Scholastic Book Fair next week! Students can bring money or you can create an account for them! I hope you all have a great weekend! Happy Friday Families! Our class did such an honorable job singing Grand Old Flag for our veteran's today! I was so proud to watch each student honor the men and women who protect our country!
Writing: Many students completed another story in writing this week! Throughout the week, students studied authors' stories and put their craft moves into their own stories! Students included emotions, movements, and pop out words to make their stories come to life! Reading: Our class has been studying Non-Fiction books this week. We have been reading a book titled Hang On, Monkey to help us learn how to read non-fiction books. The first thing we did was take a sneak peak. Then we stopped and studied each page as we read. Finally we talked with a partner about the new facts we learned from our books! Math: We have officially completed Module 1 in math! Students showed all their knowledge of different math problems by completing their end of module assessment. Each student did their best work and I was so impressed with how well everyone did! Every student used different strategies they learned to solve new problems! Social Studies: During our social studies unit, Families, we talked about different family traditions and celebrations. Our class talked about how these traditions and celebrations can be holidays or other life events like losing a tooth. Each student shared their favorite family tradition or celebration by creating a page for our class book! Students then also created a page for their families favorite foods for our class food book! We have been having so much fun learning about families! Please remember there is no school on Monday in honor of Veteran's day! I hope you all have a wonderful 3-day weekend! Happy Friday Families! I want to say a BIG thank you to our Party Room Parents and the volunteers who organized, planned, donated items, and threw an unforgettable Orange and Black celebration for our class! Each student had so much fun and it was all thanks to you! We are now in our first week of November and time is flying by! Don't forget to log on to your skyward account to sign up for conferences!
Writing: In writing this week, some students turned in their second stories! It is amazing to see how much each students writing has improved in just a couple of weeks! Our class also looked at books other authors have written to learn their craft moves and apply them in our own writing! Reading: This week in reading our class has been carefully practicing ways to read tricky words. Two strategies our class focused on were Lips the Fish and Eagle Eye. Students got ready to say the tricky word by looking at the first letter and got their lips ready to say it, then students looked at the picture to see what might start with that letter. Many students practiced this strategy and discovered new words! Math: During math this week our class has been focusing on subtraction. In our group discussions we have been doing various subtraction problems such as 10-0, 9-9, 9-8, 8-5, and 7-2. While solving these problems, we talked about different patterns and strategies that will make them easier to solve! Social Studies: To start our social studies unit Families, each student drew a picture of their family. After drawing their pictures, students showed their classmates their drawing. Each student then compared their family picture to their classmates by looking for similarities and differences. It was so fun to see some students include pets into their pictures while some students included their entire extended family! Together we all learned that families come in all different shapes, sizes, and types! Thank you again for all of your support in making our Orange and Black celebration one to remember! Next week we will have our Veteran's Day Assembly where first grade will be singing Grand Old Flag!! They have already started practicing and are very excited! I hope you all have a great weekend! |
