The rain on our zoo field trip did not stop us from having a great field trip! Thank you again to our chaperones for braving the rain and spending the day with us! We saw so many animals in their zoo habitats! What a great experience!
Writing: This week in writing students worked towards finishing a story to read to the class. Some students were able to complete a story and share it with their classmates. It was great to watch the students read their stories and show off their hard work! Each student checked their writing to make sure they had a beginning, middle, and end for their story, used the word wall to help them spell, and added more details to their pictures to create the perfect illustrations! Reading: We had our first Buddy Class with Ms. Lehl’s third graders! It was amazing to watch how easily the buddies read with our class and helped each student practice reading strategies, sound out words, and choose books to read with one another. Together, both classes came up with a goal of reading for 30-35 minutes with their buddy by finding appropriate books to read and staying focused! If they reach their goal, there will be a great reward! Math: Our class continued practicing our subtraction solving skills. Together we practiced solving -1 and -0 subtraction problems. Everyone thought this was so easy and had no problem solving each problem! We used our ten-frames to help us visualize the process of taking 1 or 0 away for different problems. Next week we will continue to develop our subtraction skills! Science: We wrapped up our study of Living and Non-living things. Our trip to the zoo helped us see the different habitats that animals need in order to survive. Some students were able to watch the animals eating food and getting special pumpkin treats! To complete the week, we drew our favorite animal from the zoo and talked about their different characteristics! Next week will be our Black and Orange party! If you would like to join us, please come to the class at 10:15 on Wednesday morning! As a reminder, costumes are not allowed but students can show their spirit by wearing Black or Orange! We will also have our next popcorn Friday next week. Don’t forget to sign up for conferences! Have a great weekend! Pajama and Cupcake Party day was a hit in our class! I love being able to reward our class for all of their hard-work and kindness! Thank you to everyone who brought in delicious decorations for our cupcakes! Check out our class’ seesaw to see all the fun we had this week with pumpkin seed counting, cupcake decorating, and writing and reading our own stories!
Please remember that our field trip to the zoo is next week! We are so very excited! Writing: This week we continued writing our personal narrative stories. We focused on making sure our stories had a beginning, middle, and end, zooming in on small seeds rather than big, watermelon stories, and checking our use of capital letters and punctuation. Our class is becoming quite the writers as they check their stories, add details, and create new masterpieces. Some students even shared some stories that they have been working on with the class! It was so fun to hear about the pumpkin patch trips, stops at coffee shops for doughnuts, and many other stories! Reading: During our reading this week we have been practicing our Good Reading Habits with a partner. In our partnerships, students encouraged each other to use different reading strategies, introduce books to each other, and remind them to read more and more! I have seen many students growing their vocabulary of sight words and many students are eager to become better readers! Math: Our class began learning about subtraction story problems this week. Together we learned about a new strategy called a Number Path. Students used their number paths to solve subtraction problems by either counting on or counting back on the number path. By the end of the week many students were solving subtraction problems independently! We also learned some new math games called Boo Bump! and “Eye” Spy. The class loved these math games that required them to use their understanding of addition and subtraction within 10. Science: Science was a blast this week! We learned about the parts of a plant, dissected a pumpkin to look at the seeds and guts, did leaf rubs, started our own pumpkin sprouts, and finished the week by learning how seeds spread around the earth to make new plants! We have had so much fun learning about living and non-living things. Everyone is excited to visit the zoo next week to see some real animals! Thank you again for all of your support this week! Have a fantastic weekend! We crammed so much learning into a short week! Our class even won our first Rewards Party by filling up our Marble Jar! I am so humbled to have a class of kind, respectful students! I hope to see some of you tonight at the Monsters and Unicorns dance!
Writing: This week in writing we focused on becoming better writers by fixing our previous small moments. We zoomed in on the big ideas of our stories, fixed our “mess ups”, and added more details to our stories by working with a partner. Our class is growing so much with their writing and they seem to have endless ideas to share! Reading: During reading this week we learned how to get on Raz Kids. While some students listened to stories on Raz Kids, others continued to strengthen their understanding of sight words by adding Would, Two, Some, and Their to their list of words. Throughout the week students used these words to make complete sentences. By the end of the week, many students were reading and using these words in their stories during writing! Math: We began a new topic in math: subtraction! Students were able to make a subtraction sentence using pictures, words, and numbers to find the missing addend. During our circle time we talked about how something is changing to the whole in our story problems and it is our jobs to find out what that change is. Together we called this a Change Unknown problem. We will continue working on these problems next week! Science: Our class continued learning about living things during our science lessons. We studied a fish and learned that fish have special organs that help them live underwater. After observing our class fish, we drew one in our science journal and labeled it. We then talked about what similarities plants and animals have by creating a Venn Diagram in our science journal. Many students noticed that plants and animals are so similar because they are both living things! We ended our exciting week with some Donuts with Dads! It was great to see so many Dads here to support our students and school! Thank you for all that you do! Please remember to bring in your Field Trip Permission Slips as soon as possible! We still need 2 more chaperones to join us to the zoo! We will be going rain or shine so dress appropriately!
Reading: This week in writing we studied the Bad Reading Habits some readers have such as The Freeze, The Mumble, The Tell Me, and The Blooper! To really know what these bad habits look like, we all acted out a different bad habit! While many of them were really funny, we still made the connection that these bad habits make it harder for us to read when reading independently. To combat these bad reading habits, we learned how to use Good Reading Habits. For example, when we are stuck on a tricky word we can use the picture to help us figure it out. We can also look at all parts of the word and not just the beginning letter. Many of us realized that we skip over some words after seeing the first letter. Each student then used our good reading habits during our Reading Workshop. It was great seeing students use these good habits to become better readers! Writing: Our Writing Workshop has taken off! We are now writing so many small moments stories with great illustrations and details. It is so fun to hear about some students going to ice cream with family, looking for Halloween costumes, and so much more outside of school. I was able to share a small moment about going out for dinner with the class! With my story, I demonstrated how we start planning our ideas. First we touch and tell our story across all the pages so we know what we will talk about on each page. This helps us not write everything on the first page! Then we sketched our story across all the pages to help us remember what to write. After sketching, we then started our writing. Each student did such a great job of planning their own writing. Math: During math this week we started looking at True Number Sentences. This is when two equations on both sides of an equal sign add up to the same number (3+1=2+2). All week we looked at different ways to make true number sentences, identify false number sentences, and create our own true number sentences. During our circle time we even partnered up to show our understanding of true number sentences. By the end of the week, we all had a strong understanding of this concept and continued to practice it in our work books! Science: We have been observing many creepy, crawly creatures in science this week! We first looked at snails and how they move around. We loved watching them slide across leaving a slime trail behind them! After observing the snails we created our own diagram of a snail and labeled them. Some of the vocabulary words we learned were foot, tentacles, and shell. After looking at snails we observed some crickets! It was so fun to watch them jump around! We then turned down the lights to see if we would be able to hear them chirp. After waiting for a little bit we finally heard them! We then created our own diagram of cricket and labeled it using words such as limb, insect, and invertebrate. Thank you to all the volunteers who came and helped in our classroom! You make a big difference; thank you!! |
