Happy Friday Families! Our week has been filled with learning and fun!
Writing: This week we finished our stories we have been working so hard on! Students were very excited to write a finishing sentence and color their detailed pictures. It was amazing to see their stories come to life as they added colors and small details! Next week we are going to launch our writing workshop! Reading: Our class started learning how to read hard, tricky words in reading this week! Together we talked two strategies we can use to become better readers: check the picture for help and drop bad habits! We talked about some bad habits that don't help us as readers such as freezing at the tricky word, mumbling the tricky word, and putting in a blooper word instead. Our class had a fun time learning about the bad habits and how to replace them with good habits. Math: During math this week, our class was able to create their own story problems! Many students created story problems about animals, shapes, and food! By the end of the week, students were solving addition problems where the totals were unknown or when an addend was unknown. Science: We continued to learn about habitats this week by conducting an experiment with plants in the desert! We sprayed our leaves and put one leaf into wax paper. Throughout the day we checked the leaves and wrote down our observations. Together the class learned that desert plants have a wax feel to them because it helps them trap water! Next week we will continue our learning in first grade! Thank you for all of your help and support! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday Families! Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy week to come join me for Curriculum Night! It was so nice to see all of you and share what we will be learning this year!
Writing: This week we continued working on our first stories. We focused on adding specific words like "starbursts" instead of "candy" and "scorching" instead of "hot". We called these sparkly words. Students also started including speech bubbles and thought bubbles to add details to their stories! Next steps are editing and adding color! Reading: Our class continued building their reading stamina and got up to 9 minutes of quiet reading! Students also learned how to scoop up phrases while reading to smooth our their voices and not sound like a robot! Our class also continued to work on their partner reading skills! Math: During math we focused on decomposing numbers and ended with decomposing 10. Together we used a picture and counting chips to figure out the missing partners for making 10. We also talked about how to read story problems in math and having to be math detectives to figure out the problem we are supposed to solve. Science: We had so much fun learning about land and water habitats this week! Each group received a stack of picture cards and used their knowledge of plants and animals to decide where each picture belonged. Every group was able to put their pictures into the land/water habitat circle correctly! Thank you again for all of your support this week! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday Families! We successfully completed our first full week of school! I hope you are all hearing great stories from school and will get lots of rest this weekend!
Writing: This week have started learning how to be a writer within a writer's workshop. Each student has started a story and has been working on it each day to make it perfect! Many students have written about experiences this summer! Reading: Our class has reached 6 minutes of stamina reading! During stamina reading, students are reading quietly to themselves and practicing good reading habits like starting a book with a sneak peak and doing something at the end of their story! Math: We have been decomposing the numbers 6, 7, and 8 this week and identifying all the way to make each number. Everyone was having fun making new combinations to equal 6, 7, or 8. Many students then put their combinations into number sentences and number bonds! Thank you all for your support this first week of school! As a reminder, we will have our Curriculum Night on September 17! We will start at 6:00 so please plan accordingly. I know our parking lot fills up fast so if you are a little late no worries! We'd still love to see you there! Have a wonderful weekend!! Happy Friday Families!
It has been such a great week getting to know each student! So far we have learned that many people have pets at home, some of us have siblings, and some of us have the same favorite food as Mrs. Crawford: croissants! We had so much fun learning about our school and classroom rules. Our class even attended our first assembly of the year! We are all excited for the learning we are going to do this year! Writing: This week we started learning about what writers make. Many students concluded that writers can make stories, poems, pictures, newspapers, and even songs! We all channeled our inner writer to start our handwriting books. Each student was very careful as they wrote their letters to make sure anyone who came into the classroom would be able to read their letters! Reading: During reading this week we listened to many fun stories and even went on a picture walk! With the book The Gruffalo, our class took a picture walk through each page of the book before reading. We then went back to the beginning to read the story. The picture walk helped us figure out tricky words we didn't know! Math: In math we started our math journals where each student solves a brain puzzle! This week we used pictures, number bonds, and number sentences to solve the brain puzzles. Student then took pictures of objects such as apples, strawberries, and dots to find the numbers hiding inside. Everyone did a great job! This has been such a fun week and we even got to start our first art project! Head over to Seesaw to check out some pictures from math and art! Don't forget to mark your calendars for Curriculum Night on September 17th and picture day on September 27th. Have a great weekend! |
