Happy Friday Families,
I hope you are all ready for some rest this weekend and enjoy a good Super Bowl Game if you end up watching! We had a lot of fun this week in class even with the constant rain! Writing: This week in writing we are wrapping up our information books. Students looked over their stories and edited them to create into their own teaching books. Many students checked their sight words, punctuation, and capitalization. Soon we will start writing opinion stories! Reading: During reading this week, we looked at different word patterns to help us understand some tricky words that have started popping up into our stories. Together we looked at blends, digraphs, and some silent letters. We then searched for these words in our books and didn't let them stop us. Math: In math this week we started learning a little bit about place value! We looked at teen numbers and broke them apart to see how many tens and ones made up the number. We then used that to help us solve different addition and subtraction problems. Social Studies: We traveled to Australia and Antarctica this week in social studies! We visited the Sydney Opera House, saw some science stations on Antarctica, and saw some penguin! The class had so much fun looking at all the different continents on our planet! Great job Claire and Hailey with your variety show performances! We loved watching you show your talents!! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday Families!
This week we were settling back into our class routines and getting back to learning! We had a lot of fun this week with our art docent project and writing our stories! Writing: Students turned in another finished non-fiction books! It was so fun to see how much students' writing skills have developed over the unit! Many students included facts, detailed illustrations, and great details to their stories! Next week we are focusing on the editing process! Reading: During reading this week, our class focused on Phonics! We played phonics bingo, learned new sight words and a sight word game, and continued developing our reading skills! Many students received new books and have shown so much progress even with the snow days! Math: This week we continued building our story problem by using a new strategy of Read, Draw, and Write. Together, students read the story problem, drew a matching picture with labels, and then wrote a matching number sentence and statement. Students did a great job of solving these problems! Social Studies: We traveled to Asia in social studies this week! Our class visited Mt. Fuji in Japan, the Taj Mahal in India, The Great Wall of China, and some islands in the Philippines! We loved seeing all the different buildings, seeing the different kinds of lands, and learning all about the continents culture! Next week we travel to Australia and Antarctica! Art: Thank you to one of our art docents, Ms. Susan, for teaching us how to use chalk and watercolor to create penguins! The class had so much fun blending the chalk and creating their own antarctic scene! I hope you all have a great weekend and I will see you on Tuesday! Happy First (school) Friday of 2020! I hope this new year will bring all of you happiness and endless memories! We had a busy week coming back from break and it was so fun to hear all the fun stories!
Writing: This week we focused on the details in our pictures. Since we are writing non-fiction books, we really wanted our illustrations to be realistic. We focused on the size, shape, and colors of our illustrations. Students finished the week by looking through their chapters and editing as they read! Reading: During our reading lessons this week, we all closed our eyes, relaxed, and listened to a story while playing a movie in our minds. After reading through the stories or poems, students then shared with a partner what they saw. Once everyone had a turn to share, we read through again showing the pictures along with the text. Some students even preferred their own pictures instead! We learned that seeing the story in our minds helps us remember what we are reading and helps us with tricky words that might appear as we read. Math: In math we continued using different strategies to solve subtraction problems including teen numbers. We refreshed our understanding of the the take from 10 and counting on strategies. Our class also learned a couple new math games that they can choose to do once they finish their work! Social Studies: We traveled to Europe this week in our social studies unit! We explored the Swiss Alps, saw the Eiffel Tower, and went to some lakes in Switzerland! Many students recognized different monuments as we traveled with some students having been to the exact places! We had so much fun exploring this continent! Inclement Weather: I know we have all been checking the weather stations for next weeks snow alerts! Please make sure you have signed up to receive our text notification that will notify you of school delays and closures.
