Happy Friday Families! This week has been filled with so much fun as we watched the 4th grade concert, took a mini art walk around the school, and played some different games in class. Spring is definitely here and we have enjoyed noticing the warmer weather and new foliage!
Thank you to all of you who have sent out emails to help our Orange Ruler Fundraiser! It is so fun to watch the class come together and work towards completing a goal! They are so spirited as the Chicken Burglars that I know they will remember their hard work, fun, and accomplishments for many years! Please keep sending out emails to gather as many donations as possible before the end date April 29th! Writing: This week we started writing our very own book reviews! Many students have created convincing opinion stories about foods, places to go, and things to do and put their skills into book reviews. To start this new writing, each student picked one of their favorite/least favorite books and thought about all the reasons why they liked/disliked this book. We then created a catchy introduction to draw readers in and then told them why they should read our recommended book! Many students showed great enthusiasm while writing their reviews and had to hold back before they spilled the beans! Reading: During our reading lessons, we went over all the strategies we have learned when meeting new characters, following the adventures they go on, learning the life lessons they teach us, and how to read like an expert. Keeping all that we have learned in mind, students continued reading new books and using their skills to become better readers! During partner reading, I heard many students teaching their partners about the important lessons their characters were learning! Spelling Words: touch, much, teach, chick, chip, choose Math: We started module 5 this week and have begun learning about shapes! Together we found the different attributes of different shapes such as triangles, squares, hexagons, etc. After charting these different attributes, we looked closer at the number on lines and corners each shape had to help us identify the different shapes. Using our knowledge, we then studied 3-D shapes to learn their attributes. By the end of the week, each student was making different composite shapes using triangles, trapezoids, rhombuses, and squares! This has been a fun unit so far! Social Studies: In our social studies unit, Needs and Wants, we took a closer look at what a want is and created a page of something that we wish we had! Many students drew candy, video games, and other fun things! We finished the week by looking at different types of shelter and learned that people need different shelters depending on where they lived. Our class also looked at how a shelter could also be a want! Each student has shown a great understanding of needs and wants this far! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Keep sending out those emails so our class stays in the lead!! Happy Friday! Can you believe we only have 10 weeks of school left? We have been learning so much this week and having fun while doing it!

Great job everyone! Writing: This week in writing we visited Ms. Lehl’s class to get some expert help on our opinion pieces. Our buddies were able to help us with our spelling, word choice, and punctuation. In class we learned how to use a buddy to do a “check-up” on our writing to fix all the bumps and bruises. Our buddies helped us make our writing easy to read, gave us some ideas to strengthen our arguments, and even gave us some counter-arguments! Many students love writing opinion pieces and have shown so much growth while writing! Reading: In reading this week we noticed that many books have a life lesson inside them just like a fortune cookie. We explored different books such as Ish, Dear Girl, and many others to find what life lesson they held and how we can use that life lesson every day. After finding the life lesson, we then asked ourselves if the characters in our story were learning those life lessons or were they teaching us the life lessons. We noticed that the characters are usually facing problem and then learn a life lesson to solve it. Throughout the week, we continued to search for life lessons and figure out how we can use those lessons every day! Math: Our class has been doing a lot of group work and partner work in math to prepare for our end of module assessment! We have finished our 4th module in math and played a math review game to prepare for the assessment. Working in teams, students solved various math problems using skills and strategies they learned throughout the module. Every group worked together and were able to solve the problems. Participating in math groups helped many students approach problems in new ways and solidified existing problem solving strategies. Social Studies: We began a new social studies unit this week called Needs and Wants. To begin this unit, we discussed what we thought a Need and a Want is and wrote down our predictions. After writing our predictions, each student was given two picture cards that they had to either place in the Needs group or Wants group. Once all the pictures were sorted, we went through each pile and explained why we thought the picture showed a Need or a Want. Many students noticed that a Need is something we can’t live without such as water, food, shelter, clothing, or money. We then compared the items to the Wants and found the group had items that we would like to have but not necessary to survive such as candy, expensive cars, or fancy dresses. Together we came up with a definition for Needs and Wants. |
