Hi Families!
Wow! We are so impressed with all the work you have been doing in Seesaw! Keep up all your hard work! Please make sure you thoroughly read this newsletter as there will be some changes next week in each subject area and information for two Zoom meetings this week! We will be posting the Seesaw activities the night before so parents can review the lesson and prepare for the next day. Please feel free to look at the assignments when they are posted, however, please do not post your response until the next day. Remember, all assignments are due by Saturday at 7PM. After that time the lessons will be archived and only posted to your students’ journal IF they completed the assignment. Reading: Continue to use Lexia and stamina read daily. You can use Raz-kids for supplemental reading material. This week’s featured book on Monday is George Washington and the General’s Dog by Frank Murphy. Learning Target: Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas or pieces of information in a text. Vocabulary: heroes- brave people, colonists- people who lived in America a long time ago, general- leader of an army, George’s troops- the men who fought along with George. This will be Monday’s reading lesson and Wednesday the students will read a fiction book off Scholastic. Writing: Writing Reviews/Opinions is over. We are starting with our final writing unit which is: SERIES WRITING. Series writing is a realistic fiction story which has fictional characters going through real problems. Examples of these books in a series are: Biscuit, Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad, Junie B. Jones, etc. They have the same characters, but the setting (when and where), problem, and solution change in each book. In week 1, students will begin Book One. On Tuesday of week 1 be sure to print off a 5 page booklet. Page 1 is the introduction, page 2 is the events that lead to the problem, page 3 the problem is revealed, page 4 the events that lead to the solution, and page 5 is the conclusion. In week 2, they will begin Book Two. In week 3, they will begin Book Three. In week 4, they will begin Book Four. We will be teaching a new strategy each day. Each Thursday, students will send us their Series Book for that week through Seesaw or email. As the weeks progress you should see improvement within their writing as they continue to learn more strategies. Of course, we encourage your child to continue to go back to their books and revise them after they learn another strategy. We will send the following documents first to help guide and support their writing: Series Writing Paper, Series Writing Checklist, Series Writing Transition Words. Math: This week, please complete the lessons on Seesaw just like previous weeks. Your goal is to try and complete the entire first template! Please feel free to copy the template onto notebook paper or print off the template on Seesaw to complete the work on paper instead of on the computer. Many students find it easier to complete math this way! In addition, if you notice your student getting distracted or not being able to focus, set a timer for 10 minutes. During that 10 minutes, your child should be independently working on the math problems. Once the timer goes off, your child can be done and start going over their work with you. Students should be working that entire 10 minutes just like we did in class! You will also notice there are only 4 assignments in math this week; we decided that students need a day to regroup and possibly catch up on assignments so there will be no formal lesson on Fridays. Because of this change, you will notice that the lessons are not sequential anymore; after looking through the units, we are choosing the lessons that are the most important to be taught before the end of the school year. Also, below you will find the previous weeks’ math lessons for reference. The days with a star are key lessons that students should watch even if they did not complete the assignment. To get to the Enrichment Class on Seesaw, login to Clever and click on Seesaw. Once you are in Seesaw, go to the upper left corner where it says which class you are currently signed into. Click on the class and in the drop-down options you should see Enrichment Classes. Click on that class and you will be able to see all your Enrichment assigned activities! To get back to our class’ Seesaw, go back to the upper left class options and click our class name in the drop down! Extras: Thank you for making your pictures larger when submitting your work to Seesaw! Remember, you are more than welcome to print off the Seesaw assignments and do them on paper, but please upload your work! Check out the flier for a virtual Scholastic Book Fair! Students will be able to purchase books (spend $25 and get free shipping!) and support our PTA! The book fair will run from May 11th through the summer! Zoom: This week there will be two optional Zoom Meetings! The first meeting will be Monday (tomorrow) at 11:30. This Zoom meeting is going to be a chance to revisit school expectations during this time. During this meeting, I will remind students of their stamina expectations, what their work is expected to look like, and a gentle reminder to have a positive attitude (listening to mom and dad!) during this tough time. I will send out the meeting invite for this Zoom tomorrow morning! Parents, you are more than welcome to sit in with your student during this Zoom so you can refer back to what we talked about! 🙂 Friday afternoon we will have our class sharing Zoom! I will send out an e-mail with the details for that Zoom Sharing Friday morning! It looks like the weather will be somewhat nice so we can all try to do Zoom outside (wifi and weather permitting, of course!). As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let us know! Happy Mother’s Day and have a wonderful week! Comments are closed.
