Happy Friday Families!
I hope you all had a nice week! I miss all of you so much and hope we can be back in school soon! I popped into the building yesterday to grab some books and it was so quiet! I definitely look forward to the day we are all together again! Next week our district is hosting a virtual spirit week! You can post your spirit to our class Seesaw and/or to Facebook and tag the ISD! I can't wait to see your superhero spirit, what you're reading, and your school colors! In addition to my e-mails and updates, Ms. Tapper will be sending out a weekly newsletter with information from the district and updates from our amazing specialist teachers! This week, I have scheduled many different Seesaw activities that will post throughout the week. Each day when there is an assigned Seesaw activity (see our class calendar under the Emergency Learning tab), a new assignment will post at a scheduled time. Reading will post at 9:30, writing at 10:30, math at 12:00, and science/social studies/SEL/art at 2:30. This is to help maintain our school schedule while doing remote learning. I have also added a sample timeline for each subject in our Emergency Learning tab. This is to give you an idea of how long your student should be reading, writing, and doing math activities/games. This is just a recommendation :) In addition to the activities assigned in our class calendar, I have added a new link in the Emergency Learning tab labeled Wakelet. This link will direct you to the district's resources for First Grade. Here you can find other activities to do with your student! This resource will be edited every week with new activities. I will continue to read My Father's Dragon to Seesaw and give little updates about what I have been up to! Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns! I miss you all! Happy Friday Families!
Our class has been so busy this week and been showing so much progress! I can't believe it is almost spring! I am definitely ready for the sunny weather! Writing: This week we created catchy introductions to draw our readers into our opinion stories! Many students asked questions or gave an interesting detail to get readers excited about their story! We then practiced writing a conclusion that left the reader knowing exactly what our opinion is! Reading: During our reading unit this week, we focused on comprehension while reading. To check our understanding, we practiced stopping every few pages and asking ourselves questions about the story. If we couldn't remember all the details, we went back to reread so we didn't miss a thing. Math: We finished our third math unit this week! Each student showed their knowledge on graphs and measurement as they completed their end of module test. Next week we will start our new unit where we will be looking closer at place value! Science: In Motion this week, our class learned the words motion and force and their respective definitions. We then used these new vocabulary words while testing different kinds of motion by using force on toy cars. It was so fun to use an everyday object to show a science topic! Thank you all for your continued support! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend with rest and relaxation! I will see you all on Monday! Happy Friday Families! Our class continues to excel in becoming life-long learners! We had a lot of fun activities this week with an art docent lesson, visiting our buddies, and getting our class picture taken!
Writing: Students completed and turned in their first Opinion stories this week! Each story was composed with reasoning for their opinion, plausible disagreements, and quotes from their peers! Many students have enjoyed writing their own opinions and next week we will start looking at how people write reviews. Reading: This week in reading we learned how important it is to slow down our reading to really understand what is happening in our story. Together we talked about how understanding the story line will also help us when we come across new words. We can ask ourselves What kind of word would make sense here? or What kind of word would go next? We practiced slowing down our reading to really comprehend what was happening. Math: We have been having so much fun measuring in class! We have used many different math tools such as centimeter cubes. paper clips, and string. Each student measured different items in the class and recorded their measurements. We finished the week by learning about graphing! Science: Our class has started our new unit in science: Motion! Together we learned what motion meant (moving from one place to another) and observed motion out on the playground. We then talked about the different kinds of motion like straight, zigzag, and curved. Our class then experimented with motion using bouncy balls! March is packed with different in-school and after school activities so please be sure to check our website and calendar! Have a great weekend! Happy Friday Families!
We survived another crazy weather week! I hope the rain stops soon! Nevertheless, we had a great week of learning! Writing: Students finished their last informational book in writing this week! Each student worked hard to start and finish an entire story using all they have learned through our unit of writing. It was wonderful to see students add facts to their writing, use zoom in pictures to add details, and check their conventions. Our next unit will focus on opinion writing! Reading: This week we have been looking at long-vowel words! A long-vowel word is when the vowel says its name within the word like game, boat, and time. We practiced finding long-vowel words in our books and breezed through them without a problem! Math: We completed our second math unit this week!! Each student did an amazing job putting their brains to the test and completing their math test to finish the unit. We then started our third math unit which will cover measurements! Thank you to those of you who donated to our class auction basket!! I hope you all have a wonderful, dry weekend! :) Happy Friday Families,
I hope you are all ready for some rest this weekend and enjoy a good Super Bowl Game if you end up watching! We had a lot of fun this week in class even with the constant rain! Writing: This week in writing we are wrapping up our information books. Students looked over their stories and edited them to create into their own teaching books. Many students checked their sight words, punctuation, and capitalization. Soon we will start writing opinion stories! Reading: During reading this week, we looked at different word patterns to help us understand some tricky words that have started popping up into our stories. Together we looked at blends, digraphs, and some silent letters. We then searched for these words in our books and didn't let them stop us. Math: In math this week we started learning a little bit about place value! We looked at teen numbers and broke them apart to see how many tens and ones made up the number. We then used that to help us solve different addition and subtraction problems. Social Studies: We traveled to Australia and Antarctica this week in social studies! We visited the Sydney Opera House, saw some science stations on Antarctica, and saw some penguin! The class had so much fun looking at all the different continents on our planet! Great job Claire and Hailey with your variety show performances! We loved watching you show your talents!! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday Families!
This week we were settling back into our class routines and getting back to learning! We had a lot of fun this week with our art docent project and writing our stories! Writing: Students turned in another finished non-fiction books! It was so fun to see how much students' writing skills have developed over the unit! Many students included facts, detailed illustrations, and great details to their stories! Next week we are focusing on the editing process! Reading: During reading this week, our class focused on Phonics! We played phonics bingo, learned new sight words and a sight word game, and continued developing our reading skills! Many students received new books and have shown so much progress even with the snow days! Math: This week we continued building our story problem by using a new strategy of Read, Draw, and Write. Together, students read the story problem, drew a matching picture with labels, and then wrote a matching number sentence and statement. Students did a great job of solving these problems! Social Studies: We traveled to Asia in social studies this week! Our class visited Mt. Fuji in Japan, the Taj Mahal in India, The Great Wall of China, and some islands in the Philippines! We loved seeing all the different buildings, seeing the different kinds of lands, and learning all about the continents culture! Next week we travel to Australia and Antarctica! Art: Thank you to one of our art docents, Ms. Susan, for teaching us how to use chalk and watercolor to create penguins! The class had so much fun blending the chalk and creating their own antarctic scene! I hope you all have a great weekend and I will see you on Tuesday! Happy First (school) Friday of 2020! I hope this new year will bring all of you happiness and endless memories! We had a busy week coming back from break and it was so fun to hear all the fun stories!
Writing: This week we focused on the details in our pictures. Since we are writing non-fiction books, we really wanted our illustrations to be realistic. We focused on the size, shape, and colors of our illustrations. Students finished the week by looking through their chapters and editing as they read! Reading: During our reading lessons this week, we all closed our eyes, relaxed, and listened to a story while playing a movie in our minds. After reading through the stories or poems, students then shared with a partner what they saw. Once everyone had a turn to share, we read through again showing the pictures along with the text. Some students even preferred their own pictures instead! We learned that seeing the story in our minds helps us remember what we are reading and helps us with tricky words that might appear as we read. Math: In math we continued using different strategies to solve subtraction problems including teen numbers. We refreshed our understanding of the the take from 10 and counting on strategies. Our class also learned a couple new math games that they can choose to do once they finish their work! Social Studies: We traveled to Europe this week in our social studies unit! We explored the Swiss Alps, saw the Eiffel Tower, and went to some lakes in Switzerland! Many students recognized different monuments as we traveled with some students having been to the exact places! We had so much fun exploring this continent! Inclement Weather: I know we have all been checking the weather stations for next weeks snow alerts! Please make sure you have signed up to receive our text notification that will notify you of school delays and closures. As always, we put the safety of our students first so even if school is in session but you think it is not safe to drive, please stay home and be safe! Below is a link to sign up for the alerts! https://www.flashalert.net/id/IssaquahSD Have a great weekend! Happy Friday Families!
I hope you are all getting ready for next weeks festivities! We are so excited for our gingerbread houses, the holiday sing-a-long, and our winter party! Thank you for all the class donations to make these fun things happen!! Writing: This week in writing students turned in their first non-fiction books! Many students wrote about different animals they learned about in our habitats unit! Each student that turned in a story had the opportunity to read it to the class where we saw their detailed illustrations and learned key facts! Reading: Our class continued our study of non-fiction books in reading today. We took a deeper look on each page to find interesting parts, learn new facts, and shared new learning with a partner. To end the week, we used our writer's eyes to find details published authors use to make their stories more interesting! Math: During math this week, our class continued to focus on our understanding of solving subtraction problems where we take 9 from a teen number. Each student created a 5-group row to show their thinking and take away 9 from the story problem. By the end of the week, everyone agreed that they have mastered this strategy! Social Studies: This week our class started learning about Our World! We started this new unit by reading and learning about maps. Together we located our continent, country, state, and city on the map! Our class then thought of some questions we have about North America that we would like to discover as we study this continent. Some students wondered how many people live in North America and what kind of animals there are. Art: We had a wonderful art lesson this week thanks to one of our art docents, Mr. Kevin! Our class created their first glass artwork and we are all excited to see how they turn out! Thank you to Mr. Jerred, Mrs. Susan, and Mrs. Tarena for all your help! Happy Friday Families!
Our class had so much fun this week visiting the book fair, dressing wacky for our spirit day, and enjoying our reward party of PJs and Donuts! I am so proud of how hard our class has been working and how much progress they have shown! I can't wait to share their learning with you at conferences! Writing: This weeks focus was conventions! We practiced writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Each student took a look at some messy sentences and helped correct them. Many students have started to check for capitalization at the start of each sentence and have even noticed they accidentally put capital letters in the middle of words! It is great to see students edit their own work! Reading: Our class continued learning about Non-Fiction books in reading this week. Together our class learned how to figure out the harder words in our books by taking words apart and then crashing the parts back together! Students did a great job of demonstrating these skills with words such as shark, bite, and tooth! Math: During math this week, we started solving addition sentences with 8 in them by making ten. We all agreed that making 10 is the easiest strategy to use because 10 is such a friendly number! By the end of the week, most students automatically knew that 8+2 makes 10 and could solve the rest of the problem easily! Social Studies: As we looked at families this week, we continued adding to our world map of where our families come from! It is so fun to see our map getting more colorful and hearing about each families experiences! Our class also took a look at how families can change over time and charted how our families changed once we were born! Buddies: This week we visited our 3rd Grade buddy class and were faced with a challenge! Our challenge was to create a non-fiction book with our buddy. Each book had to contain 2-3 facts, at least 3 pages, and details in pictures and words. By the end of our challenge, each buddy group successfully worked together to create their own non-fiction book and earned a PIZZA PARTY!! On December 11th, our class and our buddy class will get to make their own pizza's and eat them for lunch! We are all so excited to share this experience with our buddies! As a reminder, there will be no school next Thursday and Friday. I hope you all have a great weekend! Happy Friday Families! This short week flew by and we had so much fun doing art with one of our art docents and having Science To Go come to our class! We got to explore living and non-living things with our in house field trip!
Writing: Students completed their first writing unit! Many students have learned so much when writing a small moment story! This week we focused on our conventions such as a capital at the beginning of a sentence or name, punctuation, and spelling. Together we composed a list of sight words we all know how to spell and agreed that from now on, we can't spell them wrong! Reading: Every student is growing as a reader! It is so amazing to see how each student uses different reading strategies to figure out tricky words and really understand what they are reading. This week we focused on rereading our non-fiction books to make sure we really understood what we were reading. We also reread our books to make our voices sound nice and smooth when reading our books! Math: This week in math we started our second module! Students have been breaking apart number sentences to make them easier to solve. Together, we have been breaking apart 9+ problems to make them a 10+ problem. For example, we would take the problem 9+4 and take 1 from the 4 and bring it to the 9 to make 10. Our problem then became 10+3 which was so much easier to solve! Social Studies: During social studies this week, our class explored how families can be different shapes, colors, sizes and come from all parts of the earth! We traveled to different countries to learn about different family traditions and celebrations. Our class also created our own world map where we will mark down where all of our families originated from! Please remember that we have the Scholastic Book Fair next week! Students can bring money or you can create an account for them! I hope you all have a great weekend! |
